Which Tasman Glacier trip is best?

There are two ways to stand on the Tasman Glacier. A 40-minute flight from Mount Cook lands on the glacier itself: Glacier Helicopters flies past the Hochstetter Icefall, Southern Lakes Helicopters along the full length of the glacier. If you want to walk on the ice, The Helicopter Line and Mt Cook Glacier Guiding fly you up for a guided hike of about two hours. Coming from Queenstown, True South Flights combines a fixed-wing flight to Aoraki/Mount Cook with the helicopter onto the glacier.

Flights with a glacier landing

From Mount Cook Village and the Mount Cook airport. The INFLITE combo flies ski plane and helicopter on one trip and is partly a fixed-wing flight.

Flight or heli-hike?

A flight with a glacier landing takes 40 to 50 minutes and gives you a short stop on the ice. A heli-hike from the Mount Cook airport takes about three hours: around 15 minutes of flying each way and up to two hours on the glacier. Mt Cook Glacier Guiding provides boots, crampons, poles and a rain jacket. The Helicopter Line takes walkers from age 10, with a maximum of 150 kg per person including equipment.

Good to know

Landings depend on conditions

Snow landings on pure helicopter flights happen most of the year but are not guaranteed in summer: INFLITE states about 95% of the year, The Helicopter Line notes “subject to snow levels”. The ski plane combo is the year-round exception.

Departure points

The three departure points are about 20 km apart: Mount Cook Airport near the village, Glacier Helicopters at 81 Bowen Drive in the village itself, and The Helicopter Line at Glentanner Park on SH80. Check your departure point when booking.

Weight rules

Weight rules apply: INFLITE states a passenger limit of 116 kg; The Helicopter Line's heli-hike allows a maximum of 150 kg including equipment, from age 10.

Free cancellation

Every flight listed here can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure; weather cancellations are rebooked or fully refunded.

FAQ

Which flight shows the Tasman Glacier best?

The 40-minute flights follow the glacier and the Hochstetter Icefall with a landing; the 50–55-minute panoramas add the crossing to Franz Josef and Fox. For standing on the ice longer, choose a heli-hike.

Helicopter or ski plane at Mount Cook?

This site lists helicopter flights, with one clearly marked exception: the INFLITE combo that flies both aircraft on one trip and guarantees its snow landing all year. On pure helicopter flights, snow landings depend on snow levels, especially in summer.

Do I need to be fit for a heli-hike?

The operators set their own limits, and they are listed on each booking page. Examples: The Helicopter Line's Tasman Glacier heli-hike is from age 10 with a maximum of 150 kg including equipment; the guided Kepler Track day asks for medium fitness and is not for children under 8.
