Te Anau is the gateway to the wild south of Fiordland. Doubtful Sound, New Zealand's second-largest fiord, and the even more remote Dusky Sound are a long journey by road and boat — by helicopter they are one to three hours away, with remote landings on the way. Three operators fly from Te Anau: Southern Lakes Helicopters from the lakefront in town, Fiordland Helicopters and Te Anau Helicopter Services from Te Anau Airport near Manapouri. Every flight listed here lands at least once and can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours ahead.
The heart of Fiordland from the air: from the 55-minute Doubtful Sound flight to the three-hour trip over all three great fiords — Doubtful, Dusky and Milford Sound.
Doubtful Sound Discovery with Snow Landing (55 min)
From the Fiordland Helicopters hangar at Te Anau Airport to Doubtful Sound, New Zealand's second-largest fiord, with one snow landing on the way. Minimum passenger numbers apply, and exact weights are required at booking.

Lake Manapouri, Doubtful Sound and more fiords on the way to Milford Sound — landing in Campbell's Kingdom, a hanging valley above Doubtful Sound, and at Lake Quill, the source of the Sutherland Falls.
All three great fiords in one flight — Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sound, past Crooked Arm, Campbell's Kingdom, the Pembroke Glacier, the Sutherland Falls and Mitre Peak, with three mountain landings.
Short scenic flights — Kepler Mountains & alpine lakes
Not enough time for the fiords? These 30- to 45-minute flights stay close to Te Anau — over the Kepler Mountains, the Main Divide and hidden alpine lakes, each with at least one landing.
Kepler Mountains & Hidden Lakes with Tarn Landing (30 min)
Over the Kepler Mountains, the Kepler Track and hidden alpine lakes towards the Main Divide, with views back over Lake Te Anau — and a landing beside a mountain tarn.
Across the Main Divide — beech forest, bright blue alpine lakes, waterfalls and hanging valleys — with a mountain landing on Mount Kidd. Minimum passenger numbers apply.
From the shores of Lake Manapouri towards remote Norwest Lake over glacier-carved ranges — landing high on a mountain summit and again beside an alpine lake. Exact weights are required at booking.
From Te Anau, Milford Sound is a scenic flight away instead of a long drive there and back. More Milford flights — from the fiord itself, from Queenstown and from Glenorchy — are on the Milford Sound page.
Milford Sound Flight with Landing at Lake Quill (1 h 45 min)
Over Lake Te Anau, the Wick Mountains and Lake Iceberg to Mitre Peak and Milford Sound, back via McKinnon Pass — with a landing beside Lake Quill in the hanging valley that feeds the Sutherland Falls.

Pickups and minimum numbers
Several flights only operate with a minimum number of passengers — if it is not reached, you get a full refund. Fiordland Helicopters asks for exact body weights at booking.
Weather calls the shots
Fiordland is one of the wettest regions in New Zealand, and every flight depends on the weather. Fiordland Helicopters refunds in full if it cannot fly because of the weather — plan a spare day if you can.
Doubtful Sound flights start in Te Anau or at Te Anau Airport near Manapouri. The shortest is 55 minutes of flying with one snow landing; the 70-minute Southern Lakes flight lands twice, and longer trips add Dusky Sound or Milford Sound. You will find them all in the Doubtful & Dusky Sound section above.
Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound — which should I fly?
Milford Sound is the famous one, with Mitre Peak and the Sutherland Falls; Doubtful Sound is larger and much harder to reach on the ground. If you want both, two flights from Te Anau combine them: Doubtful & Milford Sound (2 h 15 min) or all three fiords including Dusky Sound (3 h).
What is a heli-hike on the Kepler Track?
The helicopter takes you up to Mount Luxmore on the Kepler Track and you walk back down. The full-day version is guided: 8 km with an 800 m descent to Brod Bay and a water taxi across the lake. The 4-hour version from Te Anau Airport is self-guided — you walk at your own pace and return by water taxi or on foot.
What happens if the weather is bad?
You can cancel every listed flight free of charge up to 24 hours ahead. Several operators also refund in full if they cannot fly because of the weather or too few passengers — the exact terms are on each booking page.
